Durga (Raveena Tandon) hails from a lower middle-class
background but is married off to Sanjay Saikia (Shinde)
who is son to a landlord in semi-urban Assam.
Unfortunately for her, he turns out to be a psychopath
with sadistic tendencies and he abuses her, not to mention,
humiliates her every now and then.
He rapes her one night, after which she gets pregenant
and gives birth to a girl, Deepa (Raima Sen). Durga's
sole support is in the form of her brother-in-law (Sanjay
Suri) who respects and loves her but dies in an accident
on a stormy night. Unable to bear her husband's torture,
Durga escapes with her daughter and finds a new life.
But Sanjay returns to claim his daughter and make her
sign documents that he will be the sole owner of the
property that his father had left in Deepa's name. Durga
finally kills him.
Hyped a great deal after the National Award for Raveena
Tandon, 'Daman,' though disappoints. With shoddy production
values, out of place songs and sketchy characters, 'Daman'
succeeds on one front alone. The performances by Raveena
Tandon and Sayaji Shinde with able support by Raima
Sen and Shaan. The music too lives up to its flavour,
especially, 'Sun Sun Goriya' and 'Gum Sum.'
